Named after Robert Addison Gillespie, a Texas Ranger, soldier, merchant, and Indian fighter, Gillespie County is located in the Texas Hill Country on the Edwards Plateau.

Native Americans

The first known residents of Gillespie County were the Tonkawa Indians. 

Sunday Haus

Many rural families had a Sunday Haus: small homes where they could sleep during weekend trips into town.

County Fair

In 1881, Gillespie County became the first county in Texas to hold a fair.
